AFL-CIO and Change to Win Unions Call for United Labor Front

Union presidents from a dozen major unions, plus leaders from the AFL-CIO and Change to Win, met Wednesday to discuss ways to create a united labor movement to effectively take on the challenges facing working Americans. Talks could lead to the reuniting of AFL-CIO and Change to Win unions, which split in 2005.

"The goal of the meeting is to create a unified labor movement that can speak and act nationally on the critical issues facing working Americans," the labor leaders said in a joint statement. "While we represent the largest labor unions, we recognize that unity requires broad participation."

When you are affected from actions by your employer do you “bother” to find out what your rights are? Unfortunately most members don’t – they evidently accept their fate without calling their Union to “check-in and check-out” what their rights are given their circumstances.

Recently Vons has laid-off and reduced in classification (Food Clerks to GM Clerks or Courtesy Clerks) close to seventy of our members, yet, very few have called to discuss their circumstances let alone their seniority rights and find out what are Von’s contractual requirements to reinstate them either from lay-off or from demotion before they hire new employees off the street.

Some tips you should “bother to know about” are as follows:

  • If you are laid-off file for unemployment benefits immediately! Do it on-line at www.edd.ca.gov – Do not try to call the unemployment office because they are overwhelmed and will not answer calls at this time. Don’t procrastinate there is a week waiting period where you get nothing! If you wait four weeks to apply your unemployment payments are not retroactive.
  • If you are laid-off or demoted to a lower classification you have recall rights back to that former classification before any new employee can be hired in your place.
  • If you are demoted for any length of time (30-90 days) call our dues department to have your dues “reduced”.
  • If you don’t respond within 96 hours after receiving a certified or registered letter to your home “recalling” you, then, you loose your recall rights! Be sure your employer has your current home address.
  • If you are demoted from a Clerk to a Courtesy Clerk and have previously signed up for health coverage for yourself and family you may have that same coverage continued through September 30th, 2009 with possible extensions because Courtesy Clerks are entitled to single coverage only!
  • If you were demoted and you were a full-time Clerk you have recall rights back to that higher classification as a full-time employee.
  • If you were laid-off were you given an opportunity to exercise your seniority to “bump” out another less senior employee within the district and keep your job?
  • If you were a GM Clerk enjoying the higher Sunday Premium, which you lost on promotion to Food Clerk, have you regained the higher Sunday Premium on your demotion to GM Clerk?

As you can see it can certainly pay off for you when you are “Bothering to Know”.
